About the museums
The Louvre Museum was founded as a medieval fortress in the 12th century. Before opening its doors as a museum in 1793, it also served as a royal palace. Today it is the most visited museum in the world. Meanwhile, the Orsay Museum occupies a former railway station. It was inaugurated as a museum in 1986, dedicated to 19th-century art and Impressionism.
